History
THE MEMPHIS STAMP CLUB HELD IT'S FIRST ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING ON FEBRUARY 4TH 1926. TWELVE CHARTER MEMBERS LATER ESTABLISHED AND FORMALLY NAMED THE CLUB ON FEBRUARY 7TH 1926. METTINGS WERE FIRST HELD AT THE HOME OF MR. L.P. WULFF, THE MEMPHIS STAMP CLUB'S FIRST PRESIDENT.
From the beginning stamp exhibitions played a major role in the Memphis Stamp Club's activities. The first exhibit was held at the 1927 Mid South Fair and was followed by a series of such shows, building up to the National Philatelic Exhibition and American Philatelic Society Convention on September 14th-19th, 1931. This elaborate event has headquartered in the Peabody Hotel, with the bourse and exhibits housed at the Municipal Auditorium. Despite the depression, and with the help of such philatelically prominent guarantors as A.F. Lichtenstein, C.W. Brayer, Gene Klein, Elliot Perry, Charles Phillips, Hans Lagerloef, and Daniel Kelleher, the show was a great success.
World War II brought an end to most organized philatelic activities in Memphis including the Memphis Stamp Club.
The celebrated Memphis Stamp Club, educational cornerstone of the West Tennessee philatelic community, will continue it's honorable traditions by serving the needs of Memphis and Mid-South stamp collectors, and throughout the world, thanks to the University of Memphis Department of Art and Communication, U of M President Bill Hardgrave, Interim Chair Department of Art and Design Professor Gary Golightly, Office Associate Department of Art and Design Taylor-Redmon Cole, Senior Administrative Secretary Department of Art and Design Tony Williamson, Henry "Emmo" Hein, Frank Sloan, Jim Lewis, Spencer Snow, MSC attorney Edgar Davison, Jay Bigalke, Editor-in-Chief of Scott Stamp Monthly and Linn's Stamp News and the Scott Catalog at Amos Media, and American Philatelic Society Executive Director, Scott English.
